Overview
Eczema is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition characterized by intensely itchy, dry, and red patches of skin. At Preston Dermatology, we understand how debilitating eczema flare-ups can be for both children and adults. Our dermatologists work closely with you to identify triggers, calm active inflammation, and establish long-term maintenance routines to keep your skin barrier intact and minimize the frequency of flares.
Causes and Risk Factors
A genetic variation affecting the skin's barrier function, an overactive immune system response, environmental triggers (soaps, allergens, stress), changes in temperature, and a family history of asthma or allergies.
Treatments
Topical corticosteroid ointments, topical calcineurin inhibitors (non-steroidal), oral antihistamines, advanced biologic medications (e.g., Dupixent for moderate-to-severe cases), and specialized barrier-repair moisturizers.
Concerns
Intense itching, red or brownish-gray patches, small raised bumps that may leak fluid, thickened or scaly skin, and raw, sensitive skin from scratching.
Body Areas
Flexor creases (inside the elbows and behind the knees), face, neck, wrists, hands, and ankles.
