Overview

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a medical condition where the body produces sweat far beyond what is necessary to regulate body temperature. This can lead to ruined clothing, social anxiety, and daily discomfort. At Preston Dermatology, we offer highly effective medical treatments that safely put an end to excessive sweating, restoring your confidence and quality of life.

Causes and Risk Factors

Overactive sweat glands triggered by abnormal nerve signaling (primary focal hyperhidrosis), genetics, or secondary causes such as thyroid issues, menopause, diabetes, or certain medications.

Treatments

Prescription-strength clinical antiperspirants, oral anticholinergic medications, and targeted neurotoxin injections (Botox) to temporarily block the nerve signals that stimulate sweat production.

Concerns

Heavy, uncontrollable sweating independent of heat or exercise; constantly damp or wet hands, feet, and underarms; skin maceration (softening/whitening of skin from moisture); and frequent skin infections in sweat-prone areas.

Body Areas

Underarms (axillae), palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and the face.

FAQs

How does Botox treat excessive sweating?

Botox is injected superficially into the affected area, where it temporarily blocks the chemical signals that turn your sweat glands on. Results typically last 4 to 12 months.

Is it safe to stop sweating in these areas?

Yes. The treated areas contain only a tiny fraction of your body’s total sweat glands; stopping sweat here will not affect your body’s overall ability to cool itself.
