Spider Vein Treatment (Sclerotherapy)

Spider veins are tiny, damaged capillaries that appear close to the surface of the skin, creating visible red, blue, or purple web-like networks. While usually harmless, they can cause cosmetic self-consciousness and occasional mild discomfort. At Preston Dermatology, we offer sclerotherapy—the gold standard medical treatment—to safely, effectively, and permanently collapse these damaged vessels, restoring a clear, uniform appearance to your skin.

Overview

Spider veins are tiny, damaged capillaries that appear close to the surface of the skin, creating visible red, blue, or purple web-like networks. While usually harmless, they can cause cosmetic self-consciousness and occasional mild discomfort. At Preston Dermatology, we offer sclerotherapy—the gold standard medical treatment—to safely, effectively, and permanently collapse these damaged vessels, restoring a clear, uniform appearance to your skin.

Causes and Risk Factors

Weakened or damaged valves within the veins, genetics, prolonged standing or sitting, hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause), aging, and sun damage.

Treatments

Sclerotherapy (injecting a specialized medical sclerosant solution directly into the vein to close it), and medical-grade compression stocking therapy to support healing.

Concerns

Visible web-like or branching networks of red, blue, or purple veins; mild throbbing or aching in the legs; and cosmetic dissatisfaction with the appearance of the legs or ankles.

Body Areas

Thighs, calves, ankles, and occasionally the face.

FAQs

How does sclerotherapy work?

A very fine needle is used to inject a solution directly into the spider vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick together. The body then naturally absorbs the closed vein over several weeks.

Is there any downtime after spider vein treatment?

There is minimal downtime. Patients are encouraged to walk immediately after the procedure, though you will need to wear compression stockings for a specified period and avoid heavy straining or hot baths for a few days.
